Preus-Brandt Forum
An evening with director Tom Holland, and panel discussion with Drs. Michael Gerson, Graduate School of Psychology, and Herbert Gooch, Political Science. Including movie, "Fright Night." In the world of horror movies, a filmmaker is lucky to have even one hit that transcends any kind of critical or financial success to become a genre classic. Writer-director Tom Holland has had several. In addition to his work on screamer favorites 鈥淭he Beast Within,鈥 鈥淧sycho II鈥 and 鈥淭hinner,鈥 Holland wrote and directed two of the greatest horror films ever made, 鈥淔right Night鈥 and 鈥淐hild鈥檚 Play.鈥 Released in 1985, 鈥淔right Night鈥 chronicles a teen鈥檚 fight for survival against a vampire who moves in next door. With 1988鈥檚 鈥淐hild鈥檚 Play,鈥 Holland created a pop culture icon in Chucky, a toy doll that becomes possessed with the spirit of serial killer. He has worked repeatedly with Stephen King and has recently released 鈥淭om Holland鈥檚 Twisted Tales鈥 on FEARnet and 鈥淭om Holland鈥檚 Untold Tales.鈥 We explore with him why it is that we love to be frightened.
